Lawrence Weiner
Lawrence Weiner is one of the world’s most influential contemporary artists. In his artistic practice, words and typographical signs replace the means ordinarily associated with artistic endeavor. Since 1968, he has devoted himself to the power of language, of written words that are cast or glued or painted on walls, on the ground or on entire buildings. The works takes concrete shape in the context of their presentation: they generate mental spaces and relations in the minds of viewers; they are inseparable from their placement; words, place and viewer interact on location. —Axel Jablonski
His statement of intent, formulated in 1968, has been a steady companion to his work ever since:
1 THE ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT THE WORK
2 THE WORK MAY BE FABRICATED
3 THE WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT
EACH BEING EQUAL AND CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST THE DECISION AS TO CONDITION RESTS WITH THE RECEIVER UPON THE OCCASION OF RECEIVERSHIP
